Vanilla flavouring comes from the seed pod of an orchid, Vanilla planifolia.
The Vanilla Orchid grows up to 30M tall with large white, cream or a greenish yellow colour blooms. These orchids are a tropical climbing variety native to Mexico.
After the Vanilla orchid flower is pollinated, the orchid’s seed pod develops into what we know as a vanilla bean. Once they are harvested they are sold either as vanilla beans or used to create vanilla extract.
Vanilla is the most expensive spice after saffron due to the production of it being so labour intensive .
So just remember that next time you go to use Vanilla Essence for baking 🙂
