Our Fun Friday Fact is here !! Did you know :
The first type of aspirin, painkiller and fever reducer came from the tree bark of a willow tree. The salicin inside willow bark works the same way as aspirin, by reducing inflammation and pain as it enters your bloodstream.
The medicinal use of salicylates from Willow Tree bark was used by Sumerians and Egyptians over 4000 years ago to treat fever, pain and inflammation. The healing properties of the Willow Tree were also used by the Native Americans who used it to treat headaches, arthritis, fever and toothache.
In 1763, Edward Stone, a British Minster experimented with Willow Bark and leaves and identified salicylic acid however the acid was so strong it caused irritation to the stomach for many so couldn’t not be widely used. In 1807, Felix Hoffman, created a synthetic version of this which was gentle on the stomach, Hoffman called this aspirin and produced for his company called Bayer
Who knew that a simple aspirin tablet had such a story behind it !?
Have a great weekend !!
