It’s the version where a guest looks at a yellowing specimen in the lobby and decides, however unconsciously, that this is not a property that pays attention to detail. It’s the version where a reviewer mentions the tired greenery or a front-of-house manager fields a question from a guest about whether the plants are real.
The goal of great maintenance is, in a very specific sense, invisibility. A planting scheme that is consistently healthy, appropriately presented for the season and visually coherent with the rest of the interior should be something guests experience rather than notice. It should contribute to the atmosphere of the space without drawing attention to itself.
Achieving that invisibility requires a level of horticultural discipline that is easy to underestimate. The timing of watering, feeding and pruning is not arbitrary – it responds to the plant’s growth cycle, the ambient conditions and the visual standards the scheme is meant to maintain. Pest and disease management requires early identification and appropriate intervention, before the problem is visible to a guest. And seasonal adjustment, such as rotating or replacing specimens as the year progresses, keeps the scheme looking considered rather than static.
